Being Truly Thankful

Some people participate in the Facebook challenge of posting something new each day of November until Thanksgiving but not me.

Not because I don't have much to be thankful for but more because I can't narrow it down to just 24 things.

I am blessed beyond what I deserve by a God who chose to show me how much He loves me by hanging His heart on a cross to die for my sins. When I keep that fact as my focus I can find gratefulness in all that I encounter.

It's easy for us all to be thankful when things are going well. It is when the ground under our feet feels shaky and unsteady that we MUST find thanksgiving in our hearts.

I just had the privilege of spending time with my oldest sister who has the amazing ability to stay eternally focused and grateful. She has had hard times, trying times in her life so it's not like she hasn't earned the opportunity to be bitter.

Burying her firstborn 15 days after he was born would give her that right in my mind. But she isn't. She is thankful He is whole and healthy and she has a longing for her heavenly home that I don't understand. But I am thankful for her example of a God-centered attitude and life that she lives.

I have another sister who lives a life of thanksgiving each day in a different way. She suffers from major stomach issues...can only eat certain foods...and can't eat a lot of foods that fall on my list of favorites but she is never upset about it. She lives each day not complaining about all she "misses" out on, but by giving to others. She is generous with her time, her talents and her heart. If you are in her life and you need her, she is there for you. That is something you can count on no matter what. I am thankful for her giving spirit and the example she is to me of God's hands here on earth.

Let's not forget my little brother...who is not little at all. He towers over us all and lives life to the fullest. He could be a different person has not been easy for him. He started his beautiful family earlier than planned and worked very hard to provide for his sweet wife and son. His dream was always to coach basketball and while he was given that opportunity it was not at the level he wanted. When he switched his career, while it was hard, he remained extremely grateful for the new job he was given. And he does it so well...he could be angry about not living his dream, but instead he works hard, he does his absolute best and he still loves to laugh and have fun. I am grateful for his example of how to accept a change in a lifelong dream so graciously.

I think my siblings would agree that this spirit of gratefulness comes directly from our parents who sacrificed much to give us the things we think we needed to be happy. My precious mom wore the same wrap-around skirts for years so that we could have the coolest, latest, hippest clothes. My dad worked tirelessly in the Army, deployed many times, protecting our great country and showing us each and every day what commitment looks like. My parents showed us love, discipline (me more so than my siblings---but well deserved), grace, forgiveness, opportunities galore and commitment to the things that are important--God, family, country--in that order.

I think about how I was raised, those with whom I was raised and where my raising has taken me and I find that I can find thankfulness in everything, if I just try. So whether life is going how I want it to go, my family has taught me that circumstances matter not--attitude is everything.

Today I am filled with gratitude to my God for giving me the exact life I have, for I know it is His best for me and THAT is enough. He will take care of the details of that life so long as I remember to follow in the footsteps of my family members and give Him thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving to you today. I pray you find ways to be grateful in all that you encounter today and every day!

It is Friday and I am linking up with Life Rearranged for InstaFriday! It is a glimpse into your week with grainy phone pictures!!!

I love the challenge of taking pictures on my phone for InstaFriday! It makes me snap the picture immediately so the moment doesn't pass me by!

These are the trees that line our driveway. They were so pretty and I loved the bright color!

I started some Christmas shopping for some of the teachers at school. One of my favorite stores had an early Christmas sale and I snagged some great gifts!

Caroline wrote this note to Taylor Swift, all on her own...I almost cried it was so sweet. It says, "My name is Caroline. Taylor you are my favorite singer." So precious!

Mark's roommate from college was here this passed weekend. My kids love him and really love to ride in his car!!

We are huge North Carolina fans (my alma mater) and my hubby showed up in the den last weekend while we were in our Carolina gear watching UNC basketball in this shirt! I almost killed him...but then he built me a fire. :)

In response to Mark's shirt, Will decked himself all out in Carolina gear. I love this kid!!

Feel The Need

I feel the need to explain that header up there. I couldn't wait. I know there is still two weeks til Thanksgiving, but I am hearing Christmas music already when I am out, a few neighbors already have their trees up and I am making lists (though not checking it twice...yet). So I decided to go ahead and let Jennisa change my header. She is great!

Did you watch the Carrier Classic last night? That was awesome watching Carolina win a ball game on an aircraft carrier.

We had basketball practice today...can't believe still that I am a coach. I am not sure Will can believe it either. Anyway, we are hanging out today and watching football.

And I just wanted to explain the header!

Have a super Saturday!!!

Proud to be an Army Brat!

Today is a day we thank those who serve selflessly to help keep America free and to defend the rights we all have as citizens of this great land. I encourage you today to thank a veteran if you see one and to exercise your right as a citizen honorably and respectfully. Men like my dad and brother in law do not choose lightly to spend so much time away from their families so you can be a bonehead about your "rights." If you are going to use your freedom of speech, speak well. If you are going to use your right to bear arms, bear responsibly. You have been given much and much is required of you.

It is not just up to men like these two to live well. It is our responsibility as a citizen of the USA to make a difference--to BE the difference.

Honor a Veteran today by the way you choose to live your life.

Where I Grew Up

My hometown is not on any map, it has no little white church.
It has no courthouse building, no pinpoint on google search.
There is no mayor, or city council to help keep things in line.
No malls, ball fields, gas stations or restaurants in which to dine.

But my hometown has much to offer, yet know you must be tough.
For the rain will come and with it bring the wind that’s cold and rough.
Yet you will find such strength within the families you meet.
A kind of understanding that settles on every street.

Community is essential, support never hides its face.
There is perseverance, patience, kindness, and always grace.
There are not only traditional schools where you learn to read and do math.
Honor, duty, country are also the topics that carve our path.

Life’s lessons are hard on kids that come from my neck of the woods.
The faces are always changing throughout all of the neighborhoods.
Sometimes a parents’ job forces them to leave for long spans of time.
Sometimes a familiar face is one of the hardest things to find.

But you can always find patriotism, faith and loyalty.
You can always find people who say, “Freedom isn’t free.”
You can always find flag-lined streets, and yellow ribbons on the trees.
And you will find the ultimate sacrifice has been made by many families.

The lessons I learned in my hometown have touched me in my soul.
They changed my outlook, my take on things, they have helped to make me whole.
My hometown is the greatest, at least that is my humble point of view.
For my hometown is “Army” where we are strong and brave and true.

Monday Update

So we had a good weekend...I definitely loved my extra hour of sleep! My family members, however, forgot how to sleep in...grrrr!

Friday, my class had a field trip--outside--and I forgot my jacket. I froze. But the kids had a great time. Learning all about ecology, producers and consumers, predators and prey and seeing snakes, owls, red wolves and bald eagles. I was exhausted on Friday so we did not do much Friday night.

Saturday was the pancake breakfast in town and the kick-off for the Christmas season around here! :) It was also the day of basketball practice.

Oh...I don't think I told you about basketball...Will's basketball to be more exact. Well, no one signed up to be the my friend Jill said she would coach...and then she volunteered me to be the assistant coach.

Now, I admit I played ball in high school...and I was an OK college scholarship for me so I was not great...anyway, you get the point. I am really good at telling teams what they should be doing while watching a game, so I figured I was ready for my (assistant) coaching debut (to be honest--the first practice was Thursday night and I had to miss it because I had a hair appointment...LOL. I don't know about you but I have to make my appointments like 3 months in advance and I was NOT missing it!)

Anyway....I played a lot of defense on Saturday. I told Mark that I was not in a defense stance that much when I played in high school. LOL

Well, it took its toll.

At the beginning of the summer I started having heel problems...never went to the doctor...just tried to deal with it. But it has gotten worse lately and Saturday I sent it into a tailspin. I could NOT walk by early afternoon.

My preliminary research (google) says it is probably plantar fasciitis. Rest and shoes inserts are recommended. So, defense against a bunch of 9 and 10 year olds was not my best move. As a result, I headed to the pharmacy to see what I could do to help myself. The pharmacist recommended I sleep in a boot to help keep my foot in the proper rest/recovery position.

So, here is what I strap on right before I go to bed now...

I know you are jealous...don't be. It creates a lot of pain for me...which is ironic because it is supposed to keep it from having pain.

And now that coaching has been added to my title, I have an extra bag to tote around with me when I leave the house. Yeah me!

Happy Monday!

It is Friday and I am linking up with Life Rearranged for InstaFriday! It is a glimpse into your week with grainy phone pictures!!!

Last weekend Caroline and I went to get our nails done like a good mother daughter team should. I tried a little something different on my nails...gray tips. This was WAY outta the box for me...still deciding if I like it. Yes, Anonymous, you inspired me.

Then the fam went to a work picnic for my work. We had a blast...this is Will and his friend Camden choking to death before the prayer because they were not smart enough to move out of the line of smoke...we are so proud of our little problem solver.

HALLOWEEN! We had a boxer and a fighting Tinkerbell. They scooped up some seriously good candy!
I guess someone knocked out the boxer and Tinkerbell was just lending her support.
A few weeks ago we had family pictures taken and the photographer contacted me and asked me if she could use one of Caroline in a magazine ad. Here is her debut! She was SO excited!!!

Join us is fun!!!!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

There is a proclamation to be made this fine November day.
There is a birthday to announce--Anonymous is her name.

I would show pictures of her from birth to just right now.
But she refuses to let me and so to her wish I bow.

I will tell you though that today is a big milestone.
She seems prepared to face it with her coffee and a groan.

But sis I say don't sweat it, turning 40 is not so bad.
You have lots to look forward to, no need to get too sad.

There are so many things left to encounter, people left to meet.
And who knows, one of those may be the young one who helps you cross the street!

Your bones may creak and moan a bit, your metabolism may slow down.
Your memory might not last as long, but that is no reason to wear a frown.

Just think, you have the right wardrobe now, elastic waists and old tshirts.
It fits the look you need when you go tell the doc of all that hurts.

Your teeth should last you much longer than this, if you continue to brush and floss.
Lord knows you don't want dentures, do you know how much they cost?

Your husband has no room to speak, because he is older than you.
Which makes you quite the young one, when you compare just you two.

You have accomplished a lot in your 40 years, so many reasons to hold your head high.
For a wonderful, successful life, you seem to have found the kigh... (make it will get the inside the joke).

So to the one who was brave enough to walk around Greece wearing no top.
Here's to a another great year for you, you are going to make 40 rock!!!

Happy Birthday Anonymous!!! This was supposed to go in the box from Leigh Ann and me but I was late!

We love you lots!!! Have a fabulous day and be sure to read our card over and over and over again!!!
