Confessions of the Weekend

This amazing group of 9-10 boys finished up the regular season on Saturday.  It was their 11th game.  It was their 11th win!  Yes, they went 11-0!  SO proud of them.  They truly play LIKE A TEAM!  They could not have accomplished an 11-0 season if they had not!
We start our post season tournament this week.  Enter nerves (for me...not them).

In our last game, the coaches for the other team went after our big guy by trying to tell the ref before the game that he fouls the whole time and camps out in the lane.  None of which is true...but the refs listened.  And the first two fouls in the first two minutes went against him.  I was livid.  THEN, the other coaches started calling out from the sidelines things like, "Double dribble" or "walk" and the refs started blowing the whistle and calling them.

Livid.  Again.  Remember, I had told the kids I wasn't going to yell at the refs.  I broke my promise.  I did tell the ref that if he was going to let the other coach call the game, then he needed to be fair and let me make some calls too.  He wasn't amused.  That's OK.  Neither was I.

He backed off and started making the right calls and we won (obviously you know that if you read the beginning).  The kids were so excited.  I gotta say, their two coaches were too!

One more week...not sure my blood pressure and nerves can take much more.  We shall see!

I have only two outfits for the week.  It is not that I did not get dressed---I totally did.  I just did not document it, apparently.  I found that shocking when I looked through my phone pictures, but sadly it is true.

 Dress: LOFT
Jeans: Cotton and Twine (local boutique)
Boots: Madden Girl
Necklace: Allora Handmade (sadly, out of business)

I took this picture and thought my outfit was complete...I was headed to the eye doctor.
 L/S tee: Target
Flower shirt: LOFT
Jeans: Ann Taylor
Booties: Sweet Cheeks--Local boutique

But then I decided that I needed something I was cold.
So...I added...
Jacket: Ann Taylor
I think it made a huge difference...what do you think?

Come on and link up with us...double dog dare you!  :)

Ten Favorite Things

This is a random post.  One of those that I thought-oh that would be fun to know about all of my favorite bloggers.  So, since I know I am one of your favorite bloggers (haha), I decided to go first.  Return the favor though.  If you don't have a blog (ahem...that would be all of you who call me family), then leave your favorites in a comment (please).

1.  My Bible.  Or my Bible app on my phone.  God's word is so important.  Knowing God's word is so important.  Memorizing is not a strong trait of mine, so I am even more grateful for daily access to the inspired Word of God.  He gave us His precious Word so that as we struggle through this life (and we WILL struggle), we have a "map" to follow.

2. My family.  I don't know what I would do without Mark and my kids.  They make my life so full and fun.  But I also want to include my mom, dad, sisters, brother, their spouses and their kids too.  I do not know what kind of family you have, but mine rocks.  They are a support system that I can always count on, they love college basketball and they make me smile!

3. My phone.  Now before you judge me on this one, hear me out.  I live no where near any of my extended family and my phone keeps me connected.  Often times during the work day, I get messages from my family that encourage me, make me smile (see above paragraph) and simply inform me of the goings on in my family.  It is also my calendar and my instant information source.  I may be more attached to my phone than you all are, but I am OK with that.

4. Dry Shampoo.  This has revolutionized my world.  I don't have to wash my hair everyday now that I have this awesome product.  With my long hair, drying time takes forever (or it feels like it).  Using dry shampoo keeps me from that torture!  My favorite dry shampoo is this one.

 5. Papermate Flair Pens.  This are my absolute faves.  If I can't use one of these, then I want a fine point pen of some sort.  :)  Mark says I have a problem.  I plead the fifth.

6.  The LOFT.  Love this store.  Comfortable.  Not super expensive.  But not cheaply made.  And I love my local store...mainly because they know me there!  :)

7. Castle. NCIS. Necessary Roughness. Rissoli and Isles. Mindless TV shows that take me away, for a short time period, from my crazy life.  Mostly cop shows.  :)  Hmmmm....

8. College Basketball.  I love basketball season.  I live in an area of the country where college football reigns supreme.  The conference I live in the middle of has won the national championship in football for the past 7 or 8 years (not sure, cuz I don't care that much).  Anyway, being a college basketball fan around here can be lonely!  :)  But I don't mind.  And my favorite team?  The UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA at CHAPEL HILL!

9. The Beach.  Specifically, Pawleys Island, SC.  I love this place because when I am there I am around family.  I love this place because--well,  who doesn't love the beach?  I should spend more time there.

10. Popcorn.  Yes.  I said popcorn.  It is my number one food.  I could eat it everyday.  I blame my dad.  :)  Favorite popper?  This one.  Now that I use this one, popcorn from anywhere else is just bleh!
Ok...your turn.  Leave me a comment with at LEAST ONE favorite thing...

Confessions of the Weekend

Well, I live in the deep south.  We had the threat of snow.  Here is proof.

This is what it looked like on Thursday after they sent us home at 11 from school because of the map above.

HAHA!  This what happens when a flake falls around here.

I have a friend from Maine.  He said one time, "In Maine, we measure snow falls by the inches or feet.  But here in the south, snow falls are measured by the number of flakes that fall."

So true!  Don't worry though.  Not a flake fell at my house, so I was safe from this mass chaos.

Now onto the basketball news of the weekend--I know you are waiting on pins and needles.

You might find yourself proud of me today.

We had ball games on Friday night and Saturday morning and I TOTALLY behaved.

No yelling at refs. No yelling at kids.

Proud aren't you?

It's a modern day miracle.  I even have the day off today so it makes this sweet weekend even sweeter!  Hope you are not working today.

In honor of Dr. King's  birthday, Will said to me Sunday night, "I have a dream, mom. And tonight it will last longer than most Sunday night dreams because I don't have to get up early tomorrow!"  :)

Have a super day!!!

The Tour Bus

I went to a very prestigious university. One that prides itself on the rigor of its academics. And on its basketball team---but that is not the point of this post--not really.

While I was a freshman at this university, I signed up for math. I faithfully showed up at my class with a professor whose home language was not English.  His accent was thick. And I STRUGGLED to understand anything he said. I was so upset over this because already I wasn't good at math, and then to have a teacher whom I couldn't understand---I was doomed. (I find it extremely funny that I never thought I was good at math when I was younger and now I am a math teacher!!!<----- find="find" funny="funny" i="i" if="if" my="my" nbsp="nbsp" of="of" p="p" parents="parents" students="students" the="the" this="this" wonder="wonder" would="would">
Anyway, I had a made friends with a pretty good (and popular) athlete that year and as I came back to my dorm and the cafeteria after class, he was sitting at a table eating and waved me over. Almost in tears, I told him my story. He got so excited. He said, "Come with me to math this afternoon. I have the BEST math teacher. It will be hard to get into his class because it fills up quickly, but I will put in a good word for you."

So off I went. I sat in on the class with my friend and his other friends....these guys....

Literally,  as I sat down by my friend, there were legs everywhere.  Legs of these basketball players.  I was sort of in awe--you know my love of this sport!  :)  Anyway, back to math...

This professor said (and I quote), "We are going to go on a tour bus of math.  In other classes, you might get off the bus and really dig down deep to find the answers.  But here, we are going to stay on the bus and drive by those sights and snap pictures.  We won't go as deep as other classes but we will learn a lot, I promise."  (I know, you might be wondering about rigor here...just smile and go with me...)

I got into the class.  And math was never so easy to understand.  This professor was a great teacher.  He had a great sense of humor too.  I blew off a study session for a test and ended up failing the test.  I wrote on the bottom of my test (and I this is one of my finest moments), "At the last rest area, I got off the bus to go to the bathroom and you left without me.  I have been trying to catch up ever since."

He gave me an A for artistic flair and and F on my test.  BUT he did let me drop that test (a policy he did not allow in his class) and count my final for 2/3 of my grade.

I have told that story a lot over the years. It is a favorite of my husband's.  He is an engineer.  No, not a train engineer.  The kind of engineer that works with numbers all day long...big numbers in hard equations with letters thrown in there for fun.  Then he takes those equations and builds things with them.  Like real buildings, roads, bridges.  He LOVES to tell this story.  It drives him nuts that our children think I am a math guru because I TEACH math...I see it going over and over in his mind, "But you took the tour bus!"

Sunday night I started a six week Beth Moore Bible Study on Deuteronomy.  Beth Moore started out the video saying that she did not do an deep study because she didn't feel like that was what God had called her to---so she was releasing her first six week study--this one.   Imagine my sheer joy and DELIGHT when I read this at the beginning of the study: "Rather than take a true journey through the Book of Deuteronomy (the ideal), we're going to embark together on more of a scenic bus tour." (emphasis mine)

I knew, immediately, that this was meant for me!!  I mean, who doesn't like a tour bus that plans an amazing trip?!?!  :)

Confessions of the Weekend

It saddens me to say that there appears to be a pattern forming. That is, if after two weekends of the same things, one can say it is a pattern.  Maybe I need more time.  I fear the same result would be there!

We had basketball games again.

It wasn't Caroline's maybe already it isn't a pattern.

But we played a game against a team that isn't very good.  HOWEVER, we were only going to have six of our eight players (two were gone to an academic bowl, of sorts) and I was a NERVOUS wreck!  Nervous because we only had six players.  Nervous because the coach of the other team hates our guts!  We had already asked him to switch the game so we could have our whole team there and he said no.  I was sick to my stomach.

No reason to be.  We won 37-5.  I know.  You are wondering what I was worrying about.  Me too--NOW!  But then it was bad.

I feel like maybe I should interject here that I DO NOT like the men in the stripes!  I make vast generalizations like they all need glasses and they all show favoritism to the team that is opposite of the one I want to win.  :)

The refs would not make a call for us because we were winning by so much and we had kids coming off the floor bleeding.  Bleeding.  And then, this one big kid on the other team started throwing elbows, like REALLY swinging his elbows and elbowing our big guy.  Nothing.  The refs called nothing.  I MAY have lost my cool.  And when the ref went by and said, "I gave him a warning." I may have lost it again.  A warning?  I believe that should have been a straight up foul.  And I made my point clear.

I just think the kids need to know that they will be protected and the kid swinging elbows should have been called for a foul AND it should have been explained to him why what he was doing was wrong.  But it wasn't.  And this is the same kid who took a swing at someone later on.  Nice.

I did better than I thought I would...but I still have a long way to go!  We have games this week...Thursday and Friday for Will, Tuesday for Caroline.  Have mercy!

Pray with Me?

I have a GREAT family.  I have two great sisters who married wonderful guys and a brother who married the perfect addition to our family.

Today, my sister in law is celebrating her almost two week old baby girl, Sophie Paige.  I think her name should have been Sophie Paige, but it isn't.  I am not sure I know her real middle name...I think it is Jane...don't be mad at me Sarah!  Isn't she beautiful?

She does look like a Sophie Paige, doesn't she?

Anyway, Sophie is precious and sweet and a teeny tiny reminder that God says life will go on.

But today Sarah's family is saying goodbye to their "PawPaw" and because Sophie is so little, Sarah can't be there.  Will you join me in praying for her new mama heart (which we all know is emotional anyway) and for her granddaughter heart?  She was VERY close to her grandfather and this is so hard for her.

He was a great man...90 years old, a WWII veteran, played quarterback at The Citadel and spent almost half his life coaching football and being a principal.  He will be missed.

Praying for you Sarah.  We love you very much.

Confessions from the Weekend

Oh man. You may not like me anymore after I tell you how I acted this weekend. Have I told you that I am the assistant coach for Will's basketball team? This is not something I ever THOUGHT I would EVER do, and I especially did not think I would do it twice.

But here I am, year two, assistant coach. Now, I have a great coach to work for (fyi: this is rec league sports...there is no pay) and she really runs the ship. And she runs it well. I am, well, the mouth on the bench. :( There really isn't another way to say it. I run my mouth.  Now Jill, the head coach, is also very loud and argumentative...we are dominating to say the least.  We don't look like it, do we?

We are doing pretty well this season (one loss in a Christmas tournament so far) and I have changed my ways.  Before the Christmas tournament, I rode the refs HARD!  Like, I called every infraction on the other team that they missed (and there are A LOT) and I argued every call against us.  Then, I realized that my behavior probably wasn't helping us.  Yeah, we have only one loss, but we were making enemies right and left (we had one opposing coach ask us how in the world we had not gotten a technical foul this season when he got one for running to the scorer's table...we actually think it is because we are women...but we have no proof of that).  Anyway, I have tried, unless the lack of call is absolutely abhorrent, to just coach...

Friday night we won our came and I did just that...mostly coach.

Saturday rolled around and we went to see Caroline play ball.  Now, she is a cutie patootie on the ball court, but she is not very aggressive.

And I am all about the rules being followed and the men in stripes calling the games correctly...all the time.  Her game started and it became clear, VERY QUICKLY, that these referees had NO IDEA what they were doing.  There is a crazy defense rule in her league that I won't get into but I will tell you this---when the refs can't keep up with it correctly, the 7 and 8 year old girls are probably not going to be able to follow it either.

Enter frustrated mom (who just so happened to swear off yelling at the refs while she coaches...) and it got ugly.  I yelled.  The lady in front of me, a fan of the other team, started arguing with me (that was NOT pretty) and then the ref told the coach to control her fan...

Not my best moment.
The kicker?  We lost.

Yes, that is correct.  1-0.  I am not sure there is anything worse than 1-0.

Except maybe my behavior!
